I have never considered myself a handyperson but this does not stop me wishing I can make a flatpack wardrobe. I look longingly at flat pack wardrobes in all the catalogues and online, and think it can not be that hard.

That’s it! I will have a go. I decide to make a small flatpack wardrobe that fits into a corner for storage. Down to the manufacturer I go. I just want something simple – a single flat pack wardrobe with one hinged door. How hard can this be?

At the manufacturer, there are so many choices and everyone is very helpful. I have made it clear this is my first project and they tell me there is help out there if I need it. I pick out a nice, plain single wardrobe flatpack and get it home quickly – excited at the prospect of putting it together.

Off comes the cardboard and all the wrapping in the search for the instructions. Aahhhh … there they are. Flicking through the instructions it looks quite simple. All I need is a screwdriver and hammer to make this flatpack wardrobe. Now where is that Philips head screwdriver? Where did I leave it last?

I sit on the floor with everything strewn all around me and try to make some semblance of order from all the bits and pieces. Then it hits me – I had better check off all the pieces to make sure they are all there.

Now that is done, there is some order and now all the pieces of wood, screws and tools are ready. But I can’t make sense of the instructions. It has nothing to do with how good the instructions are I just can not understand the whole concept of construction.

Now what? That’s right – the manufacturer’s told me about people who can make the flat pack wardrobe for me. So I ring the assemblers on the card the store gave me and put in a call for help.

What does a Flat Pack Assembler Do?

A flat pack assembler will come into my home or office at my convenience. They can assemble almost all good quality brands of flat pack furniture. So it was lucky I bought a good flatpack wardrobe to make.

The good thing about hiring in the professionals is they are highly trained and their work is guaranteed. When they arrived in my home, there were two of them and I felt a little embarrassed by how small the job was.

But they did not make me feel stupid and just got on with the job, and made my flat pack wardrobe in barely an hour. Watching the professionals at work gave me a good idea. I still need some more new furniture.

There are plenty of flat pack furniture designs – maybe I can buy more and just hire these professionals and sit back, relax and enjoy my new furniture still at a fraction of the cost from elsewhere.
