4 Steps to Install IKEA Flat Pack Furniture

Do you need to install IKEA flatpack furniture?  If so, there are several tools that you will need to gather together if you plan to install the furniture yourself.  In addition, there are a few steps you should follow in order to give yourself the best chance for a successful outcome.

Step #1:  Gather Your Tools

Before you start putting anything together, you need to first gather all of the appropriate tools.  After all, you don't want to be in the middle of an installation and then suddenly realize that you need to go out to the garage to gather a certain tool or, worse yet, run out to the store to buy the tool you need.

The instructions that came with your IKEA furniture should tell you precisely what tools you will need.  In general, the only tools that are needed for IKEA furniture installation include:

• Hammer
• Screwdriver
• Wrench
• Mallet

Often, even these tools are not necessary.  In fact, some pieces only require using an Allen wrench, which is often included with the flat pack furniture you have purchased.

Step #2:  Lay Out and Identify the Materials

Next, you need to sort through the materials that came with the flat pack furniture.  Generally, the instructions will provide a description and a picture of the various materials, ranging from wooden pieces to screws and bolts.  Identify each of these pieces and make certain you have all of the materials you need to properly install IKEA flatpack furniture.  Ideally, all of the necessary pieces will be included in the packaging.  Sometimes, however, pieces come up missing, which is why professional IKEA furniture installers carry extra materials with them. Since you obviously won't have extra materials on hand, you will need to return to the store or contact IKEA in order to get the parts you are missing before you begin assembly.

Step #3:  Read Through the Instructions

Now, you should read through all of the instructions to make sure you understand what you need to do and how each step is tied together.  When you don't read through the instructions, you may be tempted to skip certain steps because they don't seem to make sense at the time.  By reading through the instructions, however, you can get a better idea of how the installation process needs to be completed.

Step #4:  Put it Together

The final step is to actually put the piece together.  By completing steps 1 through 3 first, this final step shouldn’t be too difficult.  Still, if you are concerned about your ability to install IKEA flatpack furniture on your own, you might want to consider contacting a professional installation service to do it for you.  That way, you can be sure the job will be done right the first time.
