It is such a clever concept – a wardrobe in a flat pack. Easy to bring home – or is it?

The trip to the store is an experience in itself – rows and rows of boxes and examples on display. A feast for your eyes and you want so much that you see – easy to assemble flatpack wardrobes, kitchens, furniture for every room in your house.

So much to choose from and you thought you knew what you wanted before you went. Now you see it all, you are not so sure which one you really want. Just lucky you brought your measurements with you.

Choosing the Right Flat Pack Wardrobe

You always thought you were a good planner but when faced with a veritable smorgasbord of options and styles, now you no longer know what it is you wanted.

Finally, you settle for something close to what you originally wanted but these doors are frosted, toughened glass and the frame is a pristine white. Easy to fit into any décor if you ever move or redecorate the room.

Before you Start to Assemble your Flatpack Wardrobe

Now you are home and unloading your new flatpack wardrobe from the car. Get it inside and open all the boxes to lay it out.

Get the instructions and check each item off as you unwrap it and lay it out in the order you will need each piece. Is everything you need there? If not, it means a trip back to Ikea to pick up the items missing from your pack.

Organise any tools – a screwdriver and a hammer should be all you need as any other strange tools are included in the kit.

Assemble your Flat Pack Wardrobe

Now you are satisfied you have everything organised start putting the side and back pieces together. Make sure you follow the instructions and check each piece off against the illustrations. There would be nothing worse than getting to the end and you had made a mistake.

Now you have completed the basic structure attach it to the wall. How? While still at Ikea make sure your flatpack wardrobe has the hardware you need to fix it to the wall. Some don’t have it included and you need to purchase it separately. If you have not thought about this, you could be ducking back out to pick up the extra things you need.

Once you are satisfied the frame is right install the internal fittings – drawers, shelves, hanging rails and any other compartments. Install everything correctly, so your drawers and clothes rails work perfectly.

If you have assembled your flatpack wardrobe correctly, the doors will be easy. If not you may have to start all over again to get the frame square or you will fight those doors with frustration for a long time to come.

Once the project is finished, you can sit back, relax and feel proud of what you achieved and think about the next project.
